Does Tiger Woods need dental implants?Tiger Woods is known for getting into trouble, but this time his antics have earned him some more…physical damage. While in Italy to watch his girlfriend — Lindsay Vonn — at the 63rd World Cup, Woods was purportedly attacked (perhaps accidentally) by a cameraman while celebrating Vonn’s tournament win. The assailant managed to knock out a tooth and the image of a toothless Tiger has swept the web. The good news for Woods is that dentistry has the perfect solution for tooth loss, dental implants.

Apparently, this wasn’t the first time Tiger Woods suffered some tooth damage. His ex-wife Eli Nordegren reportedly chucked a phone at him, already damaging the tooth he most recently lost. No wonder it didn’t take much for the cameraman to knock the crown right out of his mouth.

How did this all go down? According to Excel Sports’ Mark Steinberg,

During a crush of photographers as the awards podium at the World Cup event in Italy, a media member with a shoulder-mounted video camera pushed and surged toward the stage, turned and hit Tiger Woods in the mouth

Some are disputing the story, such as the secretary general of the race organizing committee, Nicola Colli. Apparently, the incident was never reported to him. Whatever happened, the fact of the matter is that Woods is now missing a tooth and that he will most definitely soon be seeing a dentist to explore his options.

Depending on the exact details of Tiger Woods’ oral woes, there are a number of dental care choices at his disposal. Sometimes, an avulsed, or knocked-out, tooth can simply be re-attached after treating all the damaged nerves and blood vessels via root canal. But, most of the time this is an emergency treatment that has to be accomplished as soon as possible. You also need the broken tooth on hand. If the avulsed tooth can’t be repaired in this manner, the root may need to be extracted and a dental implant put in its place.

Why a dental implant? Tooth implants are the single most comprehensive treatment for tooth loss. Because they replicate the entirety of the missing tooth, from root to crown, they can restore any lost functions most effectively. Implants also protect against jawbone loss, as well as lower the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Other restorative treatments, such as dental bridges and removable dentures, simply can’t match their numerous benefits. That’s why dental implants are considered the foremost solution to missing teeth.

Best of all, dental implants aren’t just for the wealthy, like Tiger Woods. Over the years, implants have become increasingly affordable. At our own La Jolla, San Diego, CA practice we make sure our patients can access the dental care they need regardless of their budgets. Our office provides patients with a number of dental implant financing options, including some which are interest-free for qualifying patients.
