A woman with her beautiful smileWhen you meet someone for the first time, what’s one of the first things you remember about them? Most will say it was the person’s face, but studies have suggested that it’s more specifically your smile that makes the most impact.

In 2013, the creators of Invisalign commissioned a study with Harris Interactive to survey 2,000 adults about smiles. They found that 74% of those surveyed would prefer to kiss someone with nice teeth instead of crooked teeth. In addition, 18% of participants believed that they were being held back from finding love due to their imperfect smile. As you can see, having a confident smile can do wonders for a first impression, and nothing makes a better impression than having a dazzling white smile.

Why Are White Smiles Important?

You may be asking, why should I fix my dental stains? Even though stains may not necessarily mean your teeth are diseased, they still affect your appearance. Yellowed and stained teeth are also a sign of weakened tooth enamel. If left untreated, stains can become permanent, requiring more expensive dental work to fix in the future. Still not convinced? Take a look at the famous Proctor & Gamble study about white teeth.

P&G Study on First Impressions

In 2007, Proctor & Gamble completed a study about white teeth and first impressions that gave some enlightening results. The study found that, during simulated job interviews, 65% of participants were viewed as professional after a teeth whitening. In addition, 59% of study participants were viewed as more outgoing after receiving teeth whitening. In another section of the study, it was found that people with whiter teeth were perceived more positively than those with stains. These results have given weight to the perception that a white smile equates to a healthier, more successful person.

Sunny Jain, the Brand Manager for Crest Whitestrips, explained, “White teeth clearly extend far beyond just our smiles…We’ve provided whiter smiles to more than 30 million people and are thrilled the results of this study affirm their positive effect on social and professional situations.”

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Yes! Many patients may look at the ingredients for whitening, like peroxide or “bleaching” terms, and assume that these must not be safe. In actuality, teeth whitening treatments are not harmful for patients, unless you decide to drink the whitening solution. Whether it’s done in our office or at home, teeth whitening is a safe and effective procedure to brighten your smile.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There’s two methods to whiten your teeth: take-home or in-office treatments.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening: Take-home teeth whitening involves molding trays from models of your teeth. In appearance, they are similar to Invisalign aligners. The patient adds a whitening solution to the tray, and proceeds to slip the tray over their teeth. They only need to wear the tray for a specific amount of time, then remove it, clean it, and store it away for next use. Your dentist will determine how many days you need to wear the tray.

In-Office Teeth Whitening: In-office whitening requires only one or two visits, and is a little more intensive than take-home. The dentist will use a combination of whitening solution and a bleaching lamp to accelerate the process. This way, you’ll notice a difference in shading in no time.

Combine Teeth Whitening with Other Cosmetic Treatments

Teeth whitening isn’t the only solution for your dental stains. Though rare, there are certain stains or bruises that could be resistant to standard teeth whitening. Should this be the case with your smile, Dr. Lockwood can combine a number of dental treatments in order to better your smile. Teeth whitening can often be combined with porcelain veneers, dental crowns, or even dental implants (to replace missing teeth or ones that are damaged beyond repair).

These cosmetic treatments can be combined in a smile makeover approach, ensuring that the finished smile is leagues beyond the appearance of your previous smile. We can eradicate or cover up stains or replace teeth that have become too damaged.
