What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a three-part restorative system that includes the fixture, the abutment, and the crown. Integrating directly with the jawbone through the natural and organic process of osseointegration, the implant fixture acts as an artificial tooth root which supports one or more dental crowns, or permanent replacement teeth, which are attached to the root via the abutment. Dental implants perform many of the same functions as natural teeth, and can in fact help to restore oral functions that were lost as a result of tooth loss.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer numerous benefits, which include:

  • Tooth implants are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
  • They are easy to maintain, requiring no additional dental hygiene.
  • Implants are a lifetime solution, meaning they never need to be removed or replaced.
  • Dental implants help reduce the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease; they also help to make sure that your jawbone remains strong and healthy.
  • The procedure is remarkably safe, boasting of an incredible 95–98 percent success rate.

How long is the dental implant process?

The exact length of the dental implants process depends on the patient’s unique needs and characteristics. On average, and including the period of rest and recovery, the process takes between three to six months to complete. It starts with a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Lockwood, where you and he will discuss the options available to you. If you decide that implants are the best choice given your needs, Dr. Lockwood will place them in a follow-up appointment, after which you’ll enter a recovery period. Once the dental implant has completely fused with the jaw, Dr. Lockwood can then place your natural-looking permanent replacement teeth.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants differs between patients. Factors that go into determining cost include the number of implants needed, the necessity of any supplemental procedures, and the number of dental crowns necessary to replace missing teeth. During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Lockwood, he can provide you with a more exact estimate of the cost of your treatment.

We believe that all of our patients deserve the dental care they need to stay healthy, regardless of their budget. To help make this treatment available to all, we offer a variety of financing options, some of which are interest-free.

How do dental implants compare with other teeth replacement treatments?

Tooth implants are often considered the gold standard of dental care. Whereas dental bridges and removable dentures require replacing every seven to nine years on average, implants are permanent and can continue to bestow benefits for the rest of your life. Similarly, implants will never shift, loosen, or move in your mouth, instead providing strong and remarkably stable support for one or more permanent replacement teeth. Dental implants can also help protect you from oral infections, whereas dentures and bridges can often exacerbate the risk of dental health complications. Finally, tooth implants are the most aesthetically appealing option, since they look and feel just like natural teeth.

Am I a dental implants candidate?

If you are missing teeth or if you suffer from extensive tooth decay, dental implants may be the ideal treatment for you. Dr. Lockwood has had success in placing implants among a wide variety of patients, including those who suffer from bone loss and gum disease. Tooth implants may also be ideal for those who currently wear removable dentures, providing a much more comfortable and reliable solution to tooth loss.
